8BitDo Xbox Keyboard on sale now
As the world celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Xbox and Microsoft’s rich gaming heritage, the quest for the perfect tribute keyboard is in full swing. While many brands offer standard commemorative gear, 8BitDo has delivered something truly unique: the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard (Xbox Edition). This isn’t just a keyboard; it’s a statement, a chunky, transparent-green dream designed to evoke the golden age of gaming while delivering high-performance typing.
From the moment you unbox it, the experience is maximalist. The keyboard is unapologetically large and robust, embracing a design philosophy that leans into the retro 2000s aesthetic. If you were looking for something that commands attention on your desk, this keyboard is a no-brainer. It successfully blends nostalgic design with modern mechanical engineering, making it a perfect centerpiece for any gamer’s setup.
The visual appeal alone is striking. The transparent green casing immediately signals its allegiance to the Xbox legacy, featuring details like the iconic A/B/X/Y arrow keys and the glowing Xbox home button, perfectly mirroring the console’s celebrated design. It’s a beautiful nod to history, packaged in a visually arresting shell that proves quality and nostalgia can coexist.
Beyond the dazzling looks, the functional details are equally impressive. The keyboard is built for serious gaming, featuring hot-swappable Kailh Jellyfish X switches that provide a satisfying clicky feedback. This robust build quality means it can handle enthusiastic key-slams—even from the most energetic gamers—with ease. It’s hefty, solid, and built to last, offering a tangible sense of premium durability.
8BitDo has packed this retro package with thoughtful convenience features. You get versatility galore with tri-mode connectivity, allowing you to switch seamlessly between 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, or wired USB-C. For the organized gamer, the design includes a dedicated magnetic compartment built into the base to securely store the wireless receiver, eliminating the frustration of misplaced dongles.
But the real magic lies in the customization and unique controls. The keyboard is equipped with dedicated physical dials for adjusting volume and switching connection modes, giving you tactile control over your setup. Furthermore, the inclusion of 8BitDo’s famous Dual Super Buttons allows for instant macro access directly on the board, offering a shortcut solution that is incredibly handy during intense gameplay.
While the aesthetic is undeniably loud and vibrant, the functional specifications are top-tier. The board is a Tenkeyless (TKL) layout, and if you need extra numerical input, the optional matching Retro 18 Mechanical Numpad is available. Even the matching numpad snaps flush against the keyboard with a satisfying magnetic click, enhancing the overall cohesive experience.
If you are seeking a desk setup that brings a smile every time you look at it, this keyboard delivers. It’s the perfect blend of homage and hardware, offering a nostalgic experience without sacrificing modern performance. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who loves early 2000s gaming tech and wants a keyboard that is as loud and unapologetic as the retro aesthetic it embodies.
