Adding a screen to my Echo without buying an expensive display
The modern smart home is a landscape of connected gadgets, and for some, it looks more like a curated collection of quirky, accumulated items than a seamless system. I’ve arrived at this state with my collection of older Echo smart speakers—a growing army of devices that have settled comfortably into their roles around the house over the years.
While I’m certainly not a die-hard fan of Alexa, the reality is that these speakers have found a groove. They serve their purpose, offering convenience and a subtle layer of background chatter that, once integrated, becomes an undeniable part of the daily rhythm.
The next phase of the smart home journey involved repurposing my Echo Show devices. These screens offered a wonderful visual expansion of the smart speaker experience, demonstrating the potential for interactive, screen-based interaction with the voice assistants.
However, in the process of experimenting with the Echo Show ecosystem, a distinct missing piece emerged: the desire for a truly integrated visual hub. I realized that while I appreciated the smart speakers, I missed having a dedicated screen to display the ambient intelligence of the room, bridging the gap between sound and visual data.
This realization sparked a creative project. Instead of buying another off-the-shelf device, I decided to take the reins and add my own custom screen solution. It turned into a fun DIY endeavor, merging my existing smart speaker setup with a personalized display that finally delivers the visual harmony I was looking for. It’s a perfect example of how sometimes, the best tech upgrade is the one you build yourself.
