If you think your job requires endless, witty small talk, you might need a career change. I was never the most creative person, and my attempts at small talk usually fell flat. Yet, I found myself drawn into the world of Beastfolk Barber because, frankly, it looked too cute to ignore.

The premise is charmingly simple: you step into the role of Freddie, the owner of a small hair salon nestled in the vibrant, evolving landscape of Starfish City, a metropolis now teeming with beastfolk. To survive and thrive amidst this shifting clientele, Freddie must rebrand her shop to cater to the new majority and snag a magical mirror, hoping to outmaneuver the competition.

This is where the fun begins. When a client settles into the chair, they present you with a dilemma: three potential hairstyles. Using the magical mirror, you guide them through the decision-making process, trying to intuit their desires before any shears are even touched. It’s a test of judgment, creativity, and social finesse—a true test of professional hairdressing skills.

While keeping track of shifting client preferences is challenging enough, the real drama unfolds when you realize that your clientele is far more complex than just hair. Everyone who sits in your chair is wrestling with deep personal issues: chasing a dream lover, preparing for a massive family reunion, or lobbying for civil rights.

The game elevates the haircut from a simple service into a platform for social commentary. The narrative quickly moves beyond aesthetics as Freddie grapples with the political and civil unrest brewing among the various beastfolk populations. Leaders like the two-headed dragon, Luca and Varo, are actively working to change outdated human-centric laws, arguing for reforms regarding voting ages and pensions for groups like bees and mice.

Adding a layer of supernatural chaos to the salon’s daily routine is the demonic presence of Edi. Edi, seeking a change in appearance, doesn’t pay in cash. Instead, he demands a magical “re-do,” magically altering whatever Freddie desires. To earn Edi’s services and prove her skill, Freddie must successfully acquire ten regulars, adding a layer of high-stakes negotiation to every appointment.

Though the demonstration ended before Freddie could achieve total mastery over the chaotic demands of Starfish City, the experience was undeniably rich. It proved that behind every new look and every demanding client, there is a whole world of untold stories waiting to be uncovered. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most transformative experiences are found not in a clean cut, but in navigating the beautifully messy complexities of life.
