Arc Raiders publisher’s AI war against cheaters
The battle against cheating in the world of online gaming is a persistent, high-stakes affair, and as titles like Arc Raiders grow in popularity, so does the escalation of the arms race between developers and malicious players. In response to the growing problem of cheaters, Embark Studios is fielding an aggressive new strategy, moving beyond traditional defenses and diving deep into artificial intelligence to ensure fair play.
Instead of keeping its anti-cheat methods under wraps, the developer has revealed how they are tackling the issue. While they already employ robust, industry-leading defenses, the focus is now shifting to developing sophisticated, in-house AI models designed to detect suspicious behavior. This move reflects a recognition that a static defense won’t cut it against ever-evolving cheating techniques.
The foundation of the defense remains strong, incorporating kernel-level anti-cheat protection from Denuvo and real-time detection services from Anybrain’s AI. However, the real innovation lies in what Embark Studios is building internally. Executive producer Aleks explained that they are actively creating a growing set of machine-learning models that work in concert to identify suspicious actions, building a solid confidence picture before any action is taken.
These new systems are designed to be adaptive, constantly learning from data to detect novel cheats as soon as they emerge. This layered approach allows the developers to stay ahead of the curve, making the detection process dynamic rather than relying on fixed rules.
Beyond advanced detection, the enforcement policies are undergoing a significant tightening. Embark Studios has standardized the sanction for cheating, making a permanent ban the default punishment. This eliminates warnings and second chances, ensuring that rule-breakers face the full consequence immediately. Furthermore, the company is linking game copies to accounts, preventing cheaters from simply jumping between licenses by creating new profiles.
This strict enforcement aims to shut down repeat offenders entirely. Looking ahead, the team is planning a major move: implementing a hardware ban for persistent cheaters, a strategy expected later this year. While this could deliver a significant blow to continuous cheating, it brings with it complexity, as it raises concerns about innocent players who may have purchased used hardware flagged by existing anti-cheat systems.
Despite the harsh measures, the crackdown is fueled by community frustration—particularly when players see fraudulent activity being promoted by streamers. The goal, as Aleks noted, is to ensure that these actions are focused on behavior, not on incorrectly penalizing legitimate gamers. The reality of anti-cheat technology is a constant game of cat and mouse, and while developers employ these stringent measures as a powerful deterrent, the ingenuity of cheat makers continues to push the boundaries of the technological struggle.
