Finding the Balance: Arc Raiders Tests a Revolutionary PvE Toggle

In the world of competitive shooters, the lines between cooperation and conflict are often drawn sharply. But what happens when a game attempts to bridge that divide? Developers are taking a fascinating approach to player engagement with Arc Raiders by exploring a new possibility: a toggle that allows players to shift seamlessly between the high-tension PvPvE experience and a purely cooperative PvE mode.

This experimental feature, developed in collaboration with Embark, is more than just a simple mode change. It’s an attempt to listen to the community, acknowledging that the sprawling Arc Raiders ecosystem naturally attracts different types of players. The goal is to respect the diverse needs of the player base, which has historically split into distinctly friendly co-op groups and purely competitive PvP players.

To test this concept, the developers are running a special matchmaking beta between October 13-20, 2026. During this testing period, players will be able to switch between the classic PvPvE dynamic and a focused PvE experience. When in PvE mode, all player-to-player damage is eliminated, allowing the focus to shift entirely onto managing the ARC threat and developing co-op social dynamics. Players can participate in PvE sessions as solos, duos, or trios.

The design philosophy behind the PvE toggle is rooted in providing flexibility. Imagine finishing a demanding solo session in PvE and then instantly transitioning into a high-stakes PvPvE match, all within the same game environment. This seamless switching aims to cater to players who might seek a relaxed solo adventure one moment and a high-tension competitive match the next.

To ensure the PvE experience remains distinct, certain elements that rely heavily on player unpredictability and conflict are intentionally excluded from the PvE matchmaking test. Features like Night Raids, Hidden Bunkers, Locked Gates, and Frigates are specifically kept out of this mode, as they are designed to heighten the tension that defines the PvPvE experience.

Furthermore, the test aims to recalibrate the value system. In the PvE sessions, loot will be less valuable than in PvPvE, reflecting the lower risk taken by the players. This delicate balancing act suggests that while the core environment remains the same, the emotional payoff of the gameplay is deliberately adjusted.

This experiment is fueled by compelling community data that highlights a clear desire for change. The Arc Raiders player base is already divided: 34% are pure PvP players, 37% are friendly co-op players, and 27% are mixed. Crucially, over 70% of friendly players and 40% of PvP players have expressed a desire for fewer hostile encounters, with 51% of the surveyed playerbase showing interest in a dedicated PvE option.

The results of this beta test are intended to provide valuable data, helping the team understand how player preferences shape the future direction of the game. By respecting these divergent needs, developers hope to foster an experience where everyone—whether seeking war or wonder—can find their ideal place in the world of Arc Raiders.
