Battlefield 6 resurrects a 20-year-old Top Gun mode
Nine months in the making, and Battlefield 6 is finally preparing for one of its most anticipated additions: the return of naval warfare. Set to drop on July 21, this expansion introduces Tsuru Reef, a brand-new, massive map designed to redefine the scale of combat in the series, complete with new boats and weapons.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Phase two of Season 4, arriving on August 18, promises even more high-octane updates. The beloved Battlefield map Wake Island is set to receive a modern overhaul, introducing features like aircraft carrier spawn points and intense beach assaults, promising fresh tactical opportunities for players.
Adding a layer of cinematic flair, the game is also hosting a major crossover event that brings the legendary world of Top Gun into the battlefield. This collaboration introduces a new two-seater jet and resurrects an iconic mode from earlier titles, melding classic warfare with modern destruction.
One of the marquee features is Top Gun: Carrier Strike, which draws inspiration from Battlefield 4’s Carrier Assault and older modes like the Titan mode. In this reworked experience, two teams compete to sink enemy aircraft carriers using the language of Conquest, capture flags for missile barrages, and execute dramatic on-foot boarding assaults.
The developers are reportedly reworking the mechanics of Carrier Strike, which could result in gameplay shifts—perhaps requiring fewer missiles to secure victory or eliminating traditional boarding phases—to enhance the action. It is a bold move that merges military strategy with high-stakes aerial conflict.
Fans have reacted enthusiastically to the crossover. Miles “Rooster” Teller, one of the actors from Top Gun: Maverick, expressed his delight at the collaboration, describing it as a chance for two titans to meet within the vast community of Battlefield fans.
Another spin on the theme is coming via Top Gun: Fighter Sweep, a jets-only Gauntlet mission set on a modified Tsuru Reef. This mode will allow players to engage in pure aerial dogfights, offering an intense challenge that ties directly into the new naval environment.
The return of naval combat and these cinematic crossovers signal a major evolution for Battlefield 6. With the introduction of colossal new maps and deeply engaging, nostalgic modes, the series is poised to deliver not just large-scale conflict, but truly memorable gameplay experiences.
