Mastering the Puppet: The Ultimate Guide to Defeating the Aberrant Three-Faced Boss in Phantom Blade Zero

Every great adventure demands facing formidable foes, and in Phantom Blade Zero, the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet serves as an early encounter that tests your resolve. However, stumbling into this fight before you are adequately prepared can feel like running into a wall. If you haven’t yet unlocked the necessary tools, facing this boss unarmed and without upgrades will be a frustrating experience. The key to conquering this encounter lies not in raw aggression, but in smart preparation and strategic maneuvering.

Before you commit to the battle, pause and consider the strategy. Rushing in without the right gear is a recipe for a tough slog. There is a clear path to making this fight manageable and ultimately rewarding, and it begins long before you engage the boss directly.

The first, most crucial step is to think about your equipment. Do not attempt the fight with your starting gear. Instead, focus on bolstering your power. Prioritize upgrading your weapon and polishing your accessories. Specifically, seek out items like the Ancient Armor Fragment, Jewel’s Knot, and Resonance Talisman. These upgrades will significantly enhance your damage negation, health pool, and Sha-Chi reserves, setting you up for success.

Once your gear is optimized, you need to master the mechanics of the fight itself. One smart tactic involves exploiting elemental damage. If you can acquire the Livingwood Talisman—which can be found in chests near the Smuggler’s Tunnel in the Village of Lu—polishing it allows you to inflict bleed damage on the puppet. When paired with a weapon like Jagged Steel, this elemental approach can deal substantial bonus damage.

Defense is equally vital. The puppet utilizes smoky black attacks that drain your stamina completely if you attempt to block them. Therefore, mastering the art of dodging is essential. Luckily, the puppet’s attack patterns are relatively predictable, making dodging straightforward compared to complex parry counters.

Stay aggressive, but be mindful of your stamina. Your standard attacks deplete the puppet’s Sha-Chi over time, so maintain your offensive presence, blocking the puppet’s attacks between yours. As her Sha-Chi breaks, you can unleash powerful Sha-Chi combos, and remember to utilize your empowered weapon attacks when your gear is fully upgraded.

After successfully defeating the initial puppet, you will receive the Three-Headed Doll story item, which sets the stage for the next phase of the adventure. The true reward lies in the journey that follows. To unlock the subsequent rematch in the Crimson Forest against the Twisted Puppet, you will need to hunt for specific quest-marked Memory Flowers. These flowers lead you to a rematch, but you must first gather the Soul Tempered version of the Sanguine Reach weapon and the necessary Scorching Flame fragments.

These fragments are obtained by conquering specific challenges, such as defeating Zhu Yuan, The Searing Blade below the Pangzhen Sha-Chi Tower, and completing the third Long Pillar challenge in east Meigu Lake. Once you have secured these, you can Soul Temper Sanguine Reach into Blazing Edge at the Order’s underground tavern in Pangzhen. This preparation ensures that when you return to the Crimson Forest’s Mirrorwood, you face the boss not just as a challenge, but as a fully equipped victor.
