Bethesda designer says Starfield 2 is unlikely
The future of space exploration and sprawling RPGs is often filled with speculation, but when it comes to Bethesda’s ambitious Starfield universe, some of the most interesting predictions are coming not from executives, but from the designers who built the world itself.
Recently, voices from the past have weighed in on the current status of the franchise. While former BioWare lead Mark Darrah offered insights into the ongoing challenges facing BioWare in the years ahead, another veteran of the Bethesda machine delivered a more surprising assessment regarding the possibility of a sequel.
Kurt Kuhlmann, a former Bethesda lead systems designer, suggested that a Starfield 2 is highly unlikely. His reasoning is rooted in the original game’s reception, which he felt did not achieve the necessary level of success to warrant a continuation. Kuhlmann admitted that he would be very surprised if a sequel ever materialized, as he believes the original was nowhere near successful enough.
However, this isn’t a call for abandonment. Kuhlmann maintains that with the lessons learned from Starfield, Bethesda possesses the capability to craft something truly exceptional. He posited that if a sequel were pursued, it could have been much closer to the vision that the original game possessed.
This speculation comes as the parent company, Microsoft, has recently made significant strategic shifts. In an effort to refocus resources and strengthen its core franchises, Bethesda has made a deliberate move to concentrate its teams on the established giants, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, rather than the ongoing development of Starfield.
This corporate pivot leaves the fate of a sequel open to interpretation. While official statements remain silent on the topic, the focus shifts to the possibilities that linger in the air. Could a sequel finally deliver on some of the grand, unanswered questions that captivated players? For instance, would the mysterious Starborn still hold a central role? Would the long-awaited encounter with aliens finally be realized?
The journey of Starfield continues to evolve, but the potential for a sequel remains one of gaming’s most tantalizing hypotheticals.
