Digital vs physical fans furious as PS game sales stall

The debate between physical media and digital consumption is constantly reigniting in the gaming world, and recent data suggests that the shift toward digital ownership might be accelerating faster than many realize.

A look into the sales patterns of PlayStation games provides a compelling case for the dominance of digital purchases. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella recently shared some striking statistics that offer fresh perspective on how modern gamers are engaging with their favorite titles.

Piscatella pointed out that in the first half of 2026, only seven PlayStation games managed to sell more than 100,000 physical copies. This low number throws a spotlight on the changing landscape of game distribution, suggesting that the traditional model of selling physical discs is yielding ground.

The trend continues when looking at weekly sales figures. During the week ending July 11th, only two PlayStation games managed to move more than 10,000 copies. This stark contrast emphasizes a fundamental preference shift among the player base.

These figures offer potential vindication for Sony’s long-standing claim: that PlayStation owners overwhelmingly favor digital purchases over physical media. It seems the convenience and accessibility of digital storefronts are winning out in the ongoing battle for gaming revenue.
