Ditching Synology NAS for UGREEN: Massive processing power


Remember the days when a NAS was simply a vault? That’s a memory for many of us—a time when networked storage was primarily about archiving photos and files, a digital filing cabinet with a solid operating system. For years, my home server setup, anchored by a reliable Synology device, served that purpose perfectly. It was a solid companion, handling backups and media streaming with ease.

But the digital landscape evolves at warp speed, and so does what we expect from our home hardware. The simple act of storing data has given way to the desire for true compute power. Today, the evolution of home computing demands much more than just storage; it demands processing muscle.

This realization has pushed me to look for systems that offer serious grunt under the hood—hardware that can handle the demands of container orchestration, virtual machines, and intensive background processing without breaking a sweat.
