For many in the gaming industry, the line between creation and ownership can be incredibly blurry. That is the reality for Jeff Kaplan, a former director who carved out a legacy at Blizzard, yet now actively steps away from the corporate behemoth that once defined his career. Despite the ongoing evolution of titles like Overwatch, Kaplan has chosen a path of deliberate disconnection, refusing to revisit the world he helped build.

His decision to step away from the Blizzard ecosystem was not a sudden flight, but a gradual, thoughtful separation. Kaplan recounted his journey from the World of Warcraft team in 2008 to the Overwatch team in 2021, describing the experience as a profound realization about the nature of creative ownership. He noted that leaving the competitive gaming sphere felt less like a career move and more like a necessary reset.

“I kind of went through a little bit of shock leaving WoW back in 2008,” Kaplan shared. “So, when I stepped away from Overwatch in April of 2021, I was kind of used to that moment of what it meant to give all of yourself, your heart, your soul—because it’s not just a job, there’s no one who can do this and have it just be a job—and then have this shocking moment where you realize it doesn’t belong to you. It belongs to the team, belongs to the players, it belongs to Blizzard, but it doesn’t belong to you.”

Following this experience, Kaplan pursued a nearly clinical separation from the game. He made a conscious decision to disconnect entirely, telling algorithms that he was no longer interested in the Overwatch sphere. He stopped watching videos, stopped searching for his name, and simply prioritized his own creative interests.

The reality of the corporate landscape, however, proved to be a stark reminder of the power dynamics at play. Kaplan recalled a particularly challenging moment when he learned that the company’s former CFO threatened mass layoffs if Overwatch did not meet certain financial benchmarks. He described that meeting as a defining moment in his career, a deeply personal realization about the balance of power.

This period of reflection paved the way for a fresh creative pivot. After several years of quiet focus, Kaplan reappeared with a new vision, partnering with former Blizzard developer Tim Ford to launch a completely new concept: an open-world survival cowboy game titled The Legend of California.

For Kaplan, this new endeavor represents a chance to explore something much more personal and authentic. He stated that his departure from Blizzard was not an end, but a redirection, setting the stage for a new kind of creative pursuit. As he looks toward the future, the focus remains on bringing his unique vision to life, proving that true innovation often happens when creators finally get to build something that truly belongs to them.
