Facepunch reveals major s&box changes

The world of sandbox gaming is about to get a serious upgrade, as Garry Newman, the founder of Facepunch, has unveiled a major strategic shift for s&box, the studio’s spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. This isn’t just a small patch; it’s a full pivot aimed at fundamentally redefining the player experience, focusing on better curation, deeper gameplay mechanics, and solving long-standing issues regarding content discovery.

Newman’s vision is ambitious: to bring s&box in line with the legendary Garry’s Mod, and eventually surpass it. To achieve this, the development team is setting its sights on expanding the core sandbox elements. This means introducing more Non-Player Characters, adding new vehicles, significantly improving multiplayer support, and strengthening the compatibility for user-created addons. Furthermore, the team confirmed that a controversial element, the Citizen character model, will be removed, following a development cycle that ran longer than anticipated.

Perhaps the most crucial focus of this overhaul is addressing the vast and often overwhelming amount of content on the platform. s&box has struggled with an influx of low-effort or AI-generated projects, making it difficult for players to find truly exceptional creations. Recognizing that the previous “Netflix for games” approach wasn’t working, the team is implementing a new system focused on quality and discovery.

To tackle this, s&box will prioritize a smaller, highly curated selection of popular, high-quality games. The Play Fund, which governs content creation, will transition to an approval-based system, ensuring that user-submitted content meets a higher standard. This shift is coupled with a move away from custom backend systems, opting instead for deeper integration with the Steam Workshop to enhance community engagement and ease of access.

The roadmap also includes a more accessible business model. Facepunch plans to make s&box free-to-play toward the end of the year. Existing buyers will be rewarded with exclusive Steam inventory items, a move designed to attract a wider player base and provide a clearer, more sustainable path forward for the project as the team implements these major changes.

This new direction signals an exciting phase for s&box, moving it from a broad platform to a highly curated, quality-focused sandbox destination where the focus is firmly on the player experience and genuinely great content.
