The curtain has fallen on the 2024 Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) in Anaheim, just two weeks before the planned start date. In a move that has sent ripples of concern through the technology nonprofit sector, the convention was canceled, leaving behind a challenging financial reckoning for the organization and a difficult situation for attendees.

Brenda Darden Wilkerson, president and CEO of AnitaB.org, confirmed the cancellation, noting that both individual registrations and sponsorship commitments fell significantly short of expectations. This shortfall meant that GHC was unable to cover its operating costs, forcing the nonprofit to pivot and consider strategic alternatives for its future programming.

The cancellation isn’t just an administrative setback; it reflects broader financial pressures facing organizations dedicated to advancing women in computing. AnitaB.org is now grappling with how to navigate these fiscal hurdles while maintaining the momentum of an event that has been a mainstay for 32 years.

The financial reality underscores the growing demands on the tech ecosystem. AnitaB.org’s 2024 filings showed a challenging year: revenue of $27.5 million against expenses of $42.1 million, resulting in a substantial loss of $14.6 million. Furthermore, the nonprofit’s net assets roughly halved, and contributions and grants plummeted from $11.2 million in 2023 to just $724,350 in 2024.

This financial strain is mirrored in attendance figures, which declined from 29,000 in 2023 to 17,000 in 2024. The pressure is palpable as the conference attempts to balance its mission—which aims to foster AI fluency and provide a crucial career fair for hiring—with the demanding economic environment of the tech industry, where job cuts due to artificial intelligence have become increasingly common.

Despite the difficult circumstances, the event had already attracted some high-profile talent. Planned speakers included journalist Kara Swisher, Cloudflare co-founder Michelle Zatlyn, futurist Sinead Bovell, and Cathy Hackl, alongside GHC co-founder Telle Whitney. The event has historically served as a vital nexus, bringing together organizations and individuals across the industry, with sponsors including major players like Google, Goldman Sachs, Disney, and Morgan Stanley.

As AnitaB.org looks ahead, the focus shifts toward exploring new programming and financial models. While attendees were advised to cancel travel and lodging arrangements, the situation remains fluid. AnitaB.org is now working to address outstanding fees and determine a clear path forward for the celebration, keeping the community’s dedication to computing and careers firmly in focus.
