GTA 6 map size: Twice the scale of GTA 5

Get ready to pack your bags, because Rockstar Games is about to unleash a world that redefines scale. New details revealed about Grand Theft Auto VI confirm that the upcoming title will be a monumental undertaking, featuring a map roughly twice the size of Los Santos, stretching across the vibrant, sun-drenched landscapes of Leonida.

The ambition behind this massive expansion is deeply rooted in detail. Aaron Garbut, the head of development and co-studio head, describes the new world not just as bigger, but fundamentally different. He notes that the team obsessed over every corner—the rooftops, the alleys, and the intricate interiors—resulting in a world characterized by incredible density and a meticulously hand-crafted quality.

“This new world is different,” Garbut explained. “We obsessed about every part. The rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out. This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.”

This focus on interior detail suggests a level of immersion players have rarely experienced, promising a truly seamless and reactive open world.

Beyond the sheer size, Rockstar is revolutionizing the experience of playing in Leonida by completely overhauling the dynamic weather systems. Owen Shepherd, vice president of art for lighting and rendering, detailed how the team re-engineered the system to make the world feel much more alive and dynamic.

The goal was to create a world that feels dynamically solid, achieving a sense of scale never before felt in the series. Players can expect a full spectrum of atmospheric shifts, ranging from clear blue winter skies to towering cumulonimbus clouds and sporadic lightning, especially during the humid summer and autumn months typical of Florida.

These fully dynamic cloudscapes will roll across the map, making every environment feel reactive to the time of day and the weather conditions.

Marking the timeline, Grand Theft Auto VI is set to arrive on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th. While console players can jump in immediately, a PC version is anticipated later, potentially in 2027, as Rockstar prioritizes a robust launch for GTA Online on consoles first.

The arrival of Leonida promises not just a larger map, but a deeply immersive, living world ready to be explored and lived in.
