Ayoub Takes the Helm of Tabletop and Digital Gaming

The leadership structure at the intersection of tabletop gaming and digital entertainment has just undergone a significant shift. Dan Ayoub has been promoted to the big chair, taking on the mantle of responsibility for Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games. This move places him in charge of some of the most beloved franchises in gaming, including Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Duel Masters, and the broader Hasbro Digital Games portfolio.

Ayoub steps into this role replacing John Hight, who recently stepped down from the position after just two years. This promotion signals a continued focus on balancing the creative heart of tabletop gaming with the growing demands of digital innovation.

Beyond overseeing existing empires, Ayoub is already shaping the future of game development. He will oversee two major, ambitious projects currently in development: Exodus, a sci-fi RPG with a style reminiscent of Mass Effect, being developed by Archetype Entertainment, and Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons, a third-person action-adventure game being created by Invoke Studios.

Ayoub brings a robust background to the table, having previously served as an executive producer and studio head at Halo studio 343 Industries, and spent time as a vice president and general manager for the co-development studio Certain Affinity. This experience ensures he possesses both the deep knowledge of classic gaming lore and the practical understanding of modern game production.

“I’m honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games,” Ayoub stated. “Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We’ll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can’t wait to get started.”

This focus on creator respect and fan experience comes at an interesting time for the industry. Despite the high expectations following massive releases like Baldur’s Gate 3, the broader landscape has faced financial challenges. Hasbro recorded a $56 million non-cash impairment earlier this year due to the cancellation of several anticipated games planned for release in 2028 and beyond, highlighting the complex financial realities of large-scale game development.

Adding another layer of complexity is the broader discussion around artificial intelligence. While Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks is a vocal enthusiast of AI, he has been cautious about integrating it into Hasbro games, suggesting that the current focus remains on respecting creators rather than immediately adopting new technologies. However, the reality is that generative AI is clearly the inevitable future of the industry, forcing leaders like Ayoub to navigate how to integrate these powerful tools responsibly while maintaining the integrity of the worlds they oversee.
