The goal of the remaster was simple: solve all the issues that plagued the original distribution. Cagle’s v26.0 addresses past shortcomings, ensuring users can now navigate the modern web safely, easily find and install software, and enjoy a much-improved user experience, even with a beautifully redesigned terminal.
The journey to this updated version involved some serious technical finesse. Instead of relying on older methods, Cagle opted for Live Build, an official tool for Debian-based distros, to build the customized ISO. This process required meticulously adding files and references into the folder structure, setting up custom imagery and iconography within special directories.
The customization work brought the theme to life. Key visual elements, such as icon packs, color schemes, and wallpapers, were crafted by cloning and refining existing theme resources. The iconic wallpaper, for instance, was updated using the original PNG as a foundation before being adapted to a modern 16:9 format—complete with a special touch on the stylized ‘H’ start button.
To make this revival truly functional, Cagle employed Calamares, an application known for its strength in branding, to transform the ISO from a simple live-CD into a fully installable option. This step was crucial in ensuring that the nostalgic theme could coexist with modern system requirements.
