Helldivers film finds new lead after Momoa’s departure

The epic universe of Helldivers II is officially heading to the big screen, and the casting drama has proven as chaotic as the war itself. What started as a blockbuster promise involving a major star has evolved into a fascinating tale of creative shifts and unexpected cinematic pairings.

Sony initially teased a live-action film adaptation of the popular co-op shooter, Helldivers II, during CES 2025. Expectations were quickly set high, and reports suggested that movie star Jason Momoa would be the face of the action. The planned release date was set for November 2027, promising an event for fans of both gaming and cinema.

However, as filming approached, the dynamic shifted. Reports surfaced indicating that the planned star would be stepping away from the project, reportedly due to creative differences. This unexpected departure immediately set the stage for a massive casting reshuffle.

Enter Alan Ritchson, a seasoned actor known for his wide range of roles, including his memorable performance in Reacher. Ritchson was brought into the conversation, reportedly in talks with Sony to take the lead role in the upcoming film.

The irony is rich. Ritchson has a long history with the Aquaman mythos, having played Arthur Curry in the 2000s television series Smallville. This history contrasts sharply with Momoa’s later portrayal of the same character in the film adaptation, creating an intriguing, if slightly absurd, parallel between the two stars.

The casting choice now pivots on the tone of the film. While the game itself features players as disposable grunts in an unending war, the filmmakers face the challenge of finding a lead with significant on-screen presence. While both actors possess undeniable star power, observers suggest that Alan Ritchson might offer a more compelling fit for a lead role, depending entirely on the creative direction taken by the production team.

Regardless of the specific path the adaptation takes, the project remains on track. It is still slated to be directed by Justin Lin and maintain its planned premiere date of November 10, 2027. The future of the Helldivers film is now up to the actors and the creative team to define.
