Honda turns highways into wireless truck chargers

Honda is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle infrastructure by collaborating on a groundbreaking wireless charging system for Japan’s major roadways. This ambitious project brings together advanced technology and large-scale civil engineering to redefine how vehicles will power the future of travel.

The initiative involves a dynamic partnership between Honda‘s research subsidiary and the renowned construction company Taisei, along with the road builder Taisei Rotec. These partners are working hand-in-hand to integrate cutting-edge charging technology directly into Japan’s extensive expressway network.

The focus of this collaboration is the implementation of a wireless charging system designed to facilitate seamless and efficient electric vehicle travel. This technological leap aims to solve the logistical challenges of long-distance electric driving by making charging an invisible, integrated part of the infrastructure itself.

The practical application of this vision will be realized through the prestigious Tateyama Project, which targets the Tateyama Expressway in Chiba. This massive undertaking represents a significant step forward in creating smart, sustainable transportation corridors across the nation.

Scheduled to begin on April 1, 2027, the project is slated to commence starting in fiscal 2027. This timeline sets a clear path for the integration of these innovative charging systems into the physical landscape of the expressway.

By merging Honda‘s expertise in electric mobility with the deep infrastructure knowledge of Taisei and Taisei Rotec, the partners are not just installing hardware; they are building a sophisticated ecosystem where electric travel is effortless and highly efficient. This effort positions the Tateyama Expressway as a pioneering example of future-forward transportation design.
