There’s a certain kind of excitement that comes when a beloved game manages to pivot and introduce something entirely unexpected. In the world of Destiny’s Marathon, Bungie has just pulled off a bold maneuver, revealing an experimental PvE mode called Vault Breaker, promising to shake up the core extraction shooter formula.

For players who adore the adrenaline rush of shooting and the stylish aesthetic of Marathon, the traditional grind of extraction shooters can sometimes feel like a detour. That’s why the introduction of Vault Breaker—described as “a roguelite PvE experience inside Cryo Archive”—is more than just a new map; it’s a fundamental change to how players interact with the game world.

Instead of focusing purely on extraction, this experimental mode flips the script. Players will no longer leave their gathered loot behind; instead, they will delve into the vaults, earning Vault Data as their primary currency. This data is the key to unlocking progression, shifting the focus from looting to clever in-run management.

The mechanics introduce a layered system for acquiring this valuable resource. Vault Data comes in two tiers: Tier One is earned by simply accessing vaults and defeating UESC Commanders, regardless of extraction success, while Tier Two demands true persistence—successfully solving consecutive vaults on the same run before extracting. While Bungie acknowledged that this setup will be particularly challenging for solo runners, they have made room for groups, allowing players to tackle the experience in duos or trios.

As players earn Vault Data, they gain access to various upgrade paths. This currency feeds into choosing equipment enhancements—whether focusing on weapon quality, survivability implants, or a wider mix of cores. The starting point is intentionally humble: the initial Sponsored Kit offers only one standard weapon, teaching players that progression is entirely up to their chosen direction.

The rollout for this experimental mode is designed to allow the community to test the waters before a full commitment. Vault Breaker will be playable for two weeks, launching alongside the mid-season update on July 21 and running until August 4. Although the full expansion is slated for Marathon season 3, this initial release offers an exciting, limited opportunity to experience this fresh spin.

This strategic addition comes at a compelling time for Bungie. While the studio navigates shifts in the gaming industry, relying on Marathon as its anchor, introducing a novel PvE layer demonstrates a commitment to engaging players who might not be traditional extraction fans. It’s a calculated move that seeks to inject new life into the existing framework while keeping the core identity of Marathon intact.
