Matthew Rhys stars in new TV series based on an ’80s Sega game
Matthew Rhys is currently living proof that talent and tenacity can achieve historic feats on the silver screen. The actor recently swept the Emmy awards on Monday, becoming the first man to secure two Emmys for leading roles on the same night, recognizing his impressive work in both the comedy series Widow’s Bay and the limited series The Beast in Me.
This remarkable achievement only broadens Rhys’s already legendary status. He has established himself as the only person to receive a lead actor Emmy across three different genres, having previously won recognition for the drama series The Americans back in 2018.
But Rhys’s run of accolades is far from over. His momentum continues as he gears up for another new project this week: Golden Axe. This animated comedy brings a vibrant, retro spirit to the screen, adapting the iconic 1989 video game series created by Sega.
The new series promises action, humor, and a dash of nostalgia. It stars Rhys as the dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead, joined by a talented ensemble cast, including Danny Pudi, who portrays the character of Community and Mythic Quest, and Liam McIntyre, who brings his talents as JD Fenix from Gears of War 4.
The supporting cast is filled with distinctive voices, including Lisa Gilroy as the sorceress Tyris and Cart Tart, who voices the unforgettable humanoid panther.
The plot centers on the legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to face the evil giant Death Adder. Their quest to save Yuria is complicated by the entry of Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose ambition far outstrips his skill. Forced to collaborate despite their flaws, the group must find a way to stop the formidable Death Adder once and for all.
