Looking back at two decades of gaming, the Call of Duty franchise has been a constant presence. For many of us, the campaigns hold a special place, serving as more than just gameplay; they are shared memories. When the credits finally rolled on Modern Warfare 4, a sobering thought crept in: how far have these epic stories come, and what exactly is driving them now?

The memories often trace back to the early days of the series. In 2006, one might recall making first friends while playing Call of Duty 3, sharing moments from those initial campaigns over lunch. That era established the trope of superhuman operatives preventing global catastrophes—a spectacle that was undeniably cool, even if it sometimes sacrificed relatability for sheer action.

Those early campaigns, while occasionally leaning into cinematic references, featured characters who felt grounded. They were grizzled sergeants and green privates who handled overwhelming situations with a healthy dose of humor, depicting large-scale victories achieved through smaller, personal contributions.

The new direction, however, attempts to harness that same energy while leaning into a fresh cast. Modern Warfare 4 shifts the focus dramatically, placing the action squarely on a crew of young South Korean marines—alongside a few Americans—facing the sudden crisis of a North Korean invasion during their mandatory service. These characters, while adhering to familiar archetypes, possess a charm that makes them easy to root for.

This shift has reinvigorated the campaign experience. The new missions, particularly those focusing on the squad’s survival, deliver genuine chaos. Missions like Mayhem and Losing Ground are loud, frantic battles where the characters are genuinely terrified, offering a contrast to the more detached action of previous titles.

The campaign structure also found new life in the “Going dark” missions. These adventures, such as Counter Attack, showcase a superior use of resources, demanding more tactical thinking than the often gimmicky approaches seen in recent installments. The narrative successfully emphasizes outmaneuvering rather than relying solely on absurd mechanics.

A standout experience is the “Stranded” mission, which provides a genuinely unique sandbox environment. This multi-hour mission pulls the focus into a quieter, more isolating experience, allowing players to establish a hideout, craft better gear, and pursue multi-linear objectives. It felt like a focused, intense adventure that felt almost like a micro Far Cry nested within the larger CoD narrative.

While the story of the main characters is compelling, the narrative surrounding Captain Price felt relegated to the background. Modern Warfare 4 balances exploring the dark complexity of the franchise while keeping the focus tightly on the current team. This approach successfully avoids the pitfalls of merely chasing legacy elements, instead providing high-quality setpieces and superb gunplay that finally make the campaign feel like the centerpiece it deserves to be.
