The extraction shooter craze is making a roaring return to the Call of Duty universe, and this time, it’s bringing the tension, the strategy, and the sweet loot of Downzone: DMZ.

While the wider landscape of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 focuses on high-octane multiplayer, the developers are tossing in a highly anticipated mode designed to inject dynamic, high-stakes PvEvP gameplay. DMZ is back, offering that addictive cycle of dropping into a hostile environment, completing objectives, and extracting with your spoils.

Unlike previous iterations, DMZ focuses squarely on the original PvPvE gameplay loop, much like other successful extraction titles. Operators will drop into the treacherous Exclusion Zone known as Hajin, where they must contend with both AI enemies and the ever-present threat of real-world players.

But the real magic lies in the hub: the Forward Operating Base, or FOB. This is more than just a loading screen; it’s the player’s command center, an evolving stronghold that grows as the player progresses through the mode. It acts as the nexus for managing operators, securing gear, and planning the next risky deployment.

Initially, the FOB provides five essential stations, including areas for managing operators, stashing loot, a firing range, and survival kits. As players earn experience, they unlock additional stations—some for tracking progress and vanity, and others for crafting recipes and acquiring better gear using DMZ cash. The goal is clear: the further you advance, the better equipped you become for the next run.

Progression in DMZ is driven by exploration, combat, and strategic looting. Players navigate Hajin, moving from low-threat areas where they can secure initial supplies to high-threat zones where the most valuable objectives and rewards await. This journey is guided by DMZ Orders, which offer narrative direction and tactical advice for navigating the chaos.

Looting remains paramount. Beyond essential consumables like armor plates and bandages, players will be hunting for keys to unlock better loot rooms and discovering hidden underground entrances scattered across the map. Furthermore, the integration of the 3D Printer at the FOB promises to give players a crucial edge, allowing them to predict where valuable items will spawn.

The structure of the operation is broken down into Side Ops, which allow for slower, more focused exploration and material gathering, and Dynamic Operations, which inject the action by rewarding players with DMZ Cash, XP, and increasingly quality supply drops. Every deployment culminates in an After Action Report, grading the run from F to S++, providing feedback on success and tracking progress toward higher ranks.

With a sizeable map like Hajin packed with varying levels of threat, DMZ is poised to be a significant content pillar for Modern Warfare 4. While we eagerly await the full details as the game launches on October 23rd, the initial glimpses suggest that this mode has the potential to be a massive, engaging addition to the Call of Duty experience.
