The world of Overwatch is about to get delightfully spooky and incredibly dramatic. As the game launches its fifth season, A Grim Doctrine, fans are set to experience some of the most impactful changes yet, headlined by the public playable debut of a new vampiric hero: Doctrine.

Doctrine arrives to close out the ambitious Reign of Talon storyline, bringing a blend of defensive and offensive capabilities to the team. Armed with his Eternal Scepter, he can heal allies while dealing damage from mid-to-long range. Furthermore, Doctrine utilizes bat-like drones to boost the team’s healing and attack speed, culminating in an ultimate ability that redistributes life force across the battlefield, granting allies Overhealth while diminishing enemy health.

The season’s lore deepens with the introduction of the Grímsvötn map, which serves as the playable environment for the Escort mode—a feature that has not been seen in years. This new setting provides a chilling backdrop for the season’s event, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, an event tied to Halloween where players start as random heroes and gain monstrous combinations through repeated combat.

Beyond the new map, the season is packed with exciting adjustments for existing heroes. Sombra and Roadhog receive significant reworks, shaking up their gameplay dynamics. Sombra is officially transitioning from a Damage role to a Support role, with her abilities fundamentally altered to focus on team utility and healing. Roadhog’s Scrap Gun now fires stronger center projectiles, and his Trash Compactor ability now actively reflects incoming enemy projectiles, rewarding absorbed punishment.

The long-awaited adjustment to the Battle Pass system finally arrives, making it much less demanding and less fear-inducing. Players can now access Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15, allowing them to pick up exactly where they left off. This system is flexible, permitting players to run both the current Battle Pass and an unvaulted one simultaneously, without restricting access to core rewards.

Cosmetic excitement is also running high with the collaboration from the anime world of Solo Leveling. Heroes like Genji, Reaper, Anran, Reinhardt, and Lifeweaver will all sport skins inspired by characters such as Sung Jin-Woo and his Shadow Monarchs. Lucio also unveils a stunning new Mythic weapon, the Treblemaker, which brings charming audio and visual effects while housing a mystical frog. Fashion enthusiasts can also explore the new Tech Witches collection, featuring witch hats and bats for heroes like D.Mon, Shion, Juno, Sierra, and Jetpack Cat.

To cap off the season, the competitive landscape expands. Team Drives returns from October 29 to November 1, offering competitive modes that allow players to progress through Gladiator Ranks. Plus, Team Drives now expands its reach into Quick Play, ensuring there are plenty of ways for players to dive into the spooky new chapter of Overwatch.
