Nvidia DLSS 5 doubles performance, cuts 4K VRAM usage
The world of gaming graphics just got a significant AI upgrade. Nvidia has unveiled DLSS 5, a major leap in AI-powered neural rendering technology that promises not just better visuals, but a fundamental shift in how high-fidelity gaming is delivered. This isn’t just an iterative update; it’s a performance revolution that fundamentally redefines what modern GPUs can achieve.
The core of the update is raw efficiency. DLSS 5 is two times faster than its predecessor, marking a staggering 10x performance leap since March. This speed increase translates directly into gamers experiencing higher frame rates and more intense visual settings without compromise. Nvidia attributes this massive jump to systematic pipeline optimizations and refinements to the underlying neural model.
But the magic isn’t just in speed; it’s in efficiency. The new model is also designed to be lighter and smarter. The update shrinks the overall DLSS 5 footprint by nearly a quarter, reducing the parameter count to just 118 million parameters. This optimization also means that VRAM usage drops by up to 20% at 4K resolution. Essentially, this means that at similar visual fidelity, the GPU overhead is halved.
This improved efficiency has some serious implications for hardware. The company claims that this optimization can boost frame rates by up to 1.4x. For instance, a new “Preset C” mode is being introduced for Frame Generation, replacing older optical flow calculations with a lighter, faster algorithm. This new method delivers a speed boost of 35% on the RTX 5060, making frame generation smoother and more impactful than ever before.
The rollout is set to hit major titles quickly. DLSS 5 will debut in NBA 2K27 on October 16. Furthermore, Nvidia confirmed that the technology will be integrated into major upcoming titles, including Hogwarts Legacy next month.
This enhanced technology is not limited to PC gaming. DLSS 5 remains supported across the RTX 50-series GPUs, GeForce NOW, and the new RTX Spark lineup, ensuring that this cutting-edge performance is accessible across a wider spectrum of hardware. Nvidia is also rolling out a new, faster Performance Mode for Frame Generation across the RTX 50 series, RTX 40 series, and the RTX Spark laptops, setting a new benchmark for AI-assisted rendering in the next generation of gaming.
