Nvidia trailer thieves expect AI payday but score sand

The pursuit of cutting-edge artificial intelligence is driving an unprecedented demand for specialized hardware, making the supply chain for components like GPUs a lucrative, and increasingly risky, target for criminals. This heightened demand has fueled a rise in petty theft, as individuals and groups look for easy scores in high-value cargo.

The stakes were particularly high for PlusAI, an autonomous trucking startup that has partnered with Nvidia to develop its systems. Their trucks and trailers, visibly marked with the logos of both companies, became an accidental focal point for those seeking valuable AI silicon.

In a bizarre twist, two of the startup’s trailers were reportedly stolen and subsequently discovered in another location. The joke, however, was not for the thieves: the stolen units contained an astonishing 20,000 pounds of sand each.

This incident highlights the growing vulnerability in the logistics of the AI hardware boom. As enterprises and startups construct data centers and local AI servers, they become prime targets for those looking to exploit the supply chain. Criminals have already targeted high-value cargo, including heists of copper cable and other hardware worth millions, and are even attempting to hijack security escorts to reroute shipments of AI GPUs.

PlusAI utilized simulated cargo loads in its trailers to conduct real-world research and development testing, allowing them to model how a fully loaded semi-trailer would react to various road conditions. Despite the high-tech nature of the operation, the trailers themselves were secured in the warehouse, and the external units were apparently secured with simple hand locks.

The discovery of the theft came accidentally, when one of the startup’s top executives received a message indicating that the trailers—which looked like trucks—were near their workplace. This led to an immediate call to law enforcement.

The irony of the situation was palpable. The criminals, likely hoping for a massive payday from two truckloads of smart silicon, instead found themselves with 40,000 pounds of inert sand, a much less exciting find than the advanced hardware they sought.
