Obsidian + Local LLMs: Achieving private notes by leaving NotebookLM

Many of the popular AI-powered note-taking applications operate on a fundamentally cloud-first model, prioritizing service delivery over user control. This means your documents are uploaded to a remote server, and their fate is governed entirely by a company’s terms of service. The inherent risk lies in the fine print: if you click the wrong button, your sensitive content could potentially end up in a human review queue for years.
I experimented with this cloud-based approach while using tools like NotebookLM, and while I appreciated the functionality, I felt a growing unease about where my personal knowledge resided.
This experience led me to explore a different path—one that prioritized local control and genuine privacy. I decided to transition to an Obsidian setup combined with a local AI implementation.
