Phantom Blade 0 pre-load warning for 300GB storage
The excitement for new game releases often comes with a necessary, if slightly demanding, technical hurdle: storage space. But for the upcoming release of Phantom Blade Zero, developers are setting a new standard, forcing potential buyers to prepare for a significant digital footprint before they even launch the game.
Pre-loading is officially live for Phantom Blade Zero on PC and PS5 ahead of its arrival tomorrow. However, this time, the developers are asking gamers to look beyond the game’s actual file size. To ensure a smooth and seamless unlock experience, buyers are now required to have 300GB of free space available on their SSD—double the size of the game’s installation.
So why the massive demand? The requirement stems from the need to accommodate “temporary files” that exist alongside the complete game files during the pre-loading process. While these temporary files vanish once the game is fully installed on October 29th, they must coexist with the full game structure during the unlock phase. The game itself requires approximately 145GB of storage space.
This setup means that although you need 300GB free space to start the pre-loading process, the actual storage consumed by the game and its temporary files will settle back down to about 145GB once the download and installation are complete.
This requirement comes at a time when hardware shortages are keenly felt across the industry. Amid a global SSD shortage over the past year, consumer demand has driven prices up and left consumers with fewer options. Asking for substantially more free space during pre-loading raises an interesting paradox: is this a necessary technical constraint, or an unnecessary burden on the user?
Some tech experts suggest a simpler approach. One viewpoint is that gamers might find it worthwhile to skip the pre-loading step entirely and wait until the game launches to download, thereby avoiding the need to free up massive amounts of space preemptively.
Ultimately, while the demand for extra space is tied to the technical requirements of the pre-loading system, it provides a reminder that even in the world of gaming, the digital demands often extend far beyond the graphical spectacle itself.
