Pokémon Unite is shutting down next year

A beloved title is preparing for an unexpected farewell. After nearly five years of spirited competition, the popular MOBA game Pokémon Unite is set to be permanently shut down, marking the end of an era for the mobile and console gaming community.

The decision is final: the game will go offline on March 23rd, 2027. At midnight on that date, the servers will cease operation, and the game will be permanently delisted from all digital stores. This means players will no longer be able to access the game, though some installed copies will retain limited functionality.

While the core experience is ending, the game has certainly left its mark. Pokémon Unite offered a dedicated player base and enjoyed competitive support, highlighted by events such as the recent Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown Tokyo tournament, which is still planned to take place before the shutdown.

In essence, Pokémon Unite provided a familiar MOBA experience where players chose iconic Pokémon to control across various maps. The gameplay involved engaging PvE skirmishes to level up, followed by intense PvP battles centered around strategic tower pushes into the opposing team’s base.

For those who have the game installed, access won’t vanish entirely. Players will still be able to launch the application and utilize the in-game library feature, allowing them to view each Pokémon and learn more about the roster they once commanded.

The choice to retire a title that has enjoyed a loyal following raises interesting questions about game longevity. It seems that publishers have opted to end the game completely rather than allow it to remain accessible for fans, a move that some observers suggest the game should have been cheap enough to simply let run indefinitely.
