PS5 emulator runs Demon’s Souls at 120FPS

The landscape of gaming is undergoing a massive transformation, driven by a potent combination of technological evolution and evolving console policies. This year has proven to be a pivotal moment for gamers, marking significant strides in bringing beloved console exclusives to the PC environment for the very first time. Simultaneously, the world of emulation has continued its rapid development, offering incredible new possibilities for retro titles.

The evolution of PlayStation 5 emulation is particularly fascinating. While some titles make a simple appearance, others showcase staggering technical prowess. For instance, Insomniac’s Wolverine is already playable through a PS5 emulator, proving the viability of this technology. However, the true test of emulation’s potential is seen in more demanding titles. The Demon’s Souls remake, for example, has moved far beyond mere compatibility.

Recent benchmarks have demonstrated just how impressive this progress is. Geralt Benchmarks shared a video showcasing the Demon’s Souls remake running on a PS5 emulator, powered by a high-end PC setup featuring an RTX 5070 graphics card and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU. Running at 1440p resolution, the game was able to hit a stunning 120FPS, utilizing 2x DLSS Frame Generation to achieve this remarkable performance.

This achievement is noteworthy because the original PS5 console limits Demon’s Souls to a stable 60FPS. Doubling that frame rate in an emulated environment is a serious feat. Even when the game is run at standard PS5 settings within the emulator, it typically manages to run above 70FPS, without even employing Frame Generation.

This accelerated development in emulation is fueled by shifts at Sony. Recent announcements regarding the end of support for physical game discs, alongside the decision to restrict access to the digital stores for older consoles like the PS3 and PS Vita, have created a strong impetus for developers and enthusiasts to explore and refine the emulation space.

The trend suggests that emulation is not just a way to play old games, but a powerful tool for extending the life and accessibility of gaming content. As technology continues to push boundaries, the question remains: will this trajectory lead to more console exclusives becoming playable across different platforms, perhaps even anticipating titles like GTA VI? The future of gaming is clearly one of expansive possibilities.
