In the sprawling, often overlooked landscape of 1990s arcade history, certain titles managed to slip away from mainstream memory, leaving behind a treasure trove of forgotten pixelated adventures. Among these hidden gems was a collection of games released by the Spanish label Gaelco, whose output included some truly bizarre and wonderful electronic dartboards and arcade hits.

Now, retro specialists QUByte Interactive are digging up this digital dust and bringing two of Gaelco’s most obscure creations to the modern gaming world via Steam. These resurrected classics offer a delightfully strange journey into the world of 90s arcade action.

First up is Thunder Hoop, an original platformer from 1992. The game places the player in the shoes of a teenage hero who navigates a vibrant cityscape, plunging through sewers and underwater levels while battling cartoonish monsters. It’s a classic, quirky adventure where platforming skills meet chaotic monster fights.

The sequel, TH Strikes Back, throws the hero into a completely different, albeit equally wild, scenario. Ages up to a beefcake adult, the sequel ramps up the action with run-and-gun sequences, introducing new adversaries and some truly outlandish elements, including sequences where the hero transforms into Super Saiyan and rockets into space for a Gradius-style scrolling shooter experience.

These games are not just nostalgic throwbacks; they are modern experiences refined with classic flair. Both titles feature modern quality-of-life features, such as save states and a rewind function, allowing players to master the chaos at their own pace. Furthermore, fans can customize the experience with screen filters designed to replicate the authentic look of old CRT monitors.

QUByte Interactive has also introduced cooperative gameplay options. While the original Thunder Hoop offers a turn-based multiplayer mode, the sequel TH Strikes Back features local co-op, inviting players to team up in classic arcade fashion.

Get ready to dive into this bizarre collection. The full Thunder Hoop Collection will be available on Steam starting on October 8.
