Rocket Boy in Administration
The dream of Build a Rocket Boy, a studio founded by the legendary Leslie Benzies, is facing a dramatic halt. The company has officially filed for administration, signaling the end of an ambitious creative venture that once occupied the space of gaming giants.
The news, which surfaced just last week, confirms that the studio is navigating a challenging financial period. Public records from the UK’s Companies House now reflect the formal entry into administration, revealing the severe financial pressures the company had been under.
The numbers paint a stark picture of difficulty. In the nine months ending September 30, 2025, the studio reported significant operating losses, posting an operating loss of £47.5 million and a net loss of £36.2 million. This deficit was compounded by outstanding debts, as the company owed its creditors a staggering £61.8 million at that time, a figure that ultimately precipitated the insolvency filing.
Cash reserves have been severely depleted, plummeting from £51.9 million at the close of 2024 to just £19.4 million by September 2025. Furthermore, directors warned that the looming liability of £17 million related to preference shares would require immediate and substantial new funding to address.
This financial spiral suggests that the future for the studio is extremely bleak, making it highly unlikely that the doors will reopen in the foreseeable future. The situation highlights the precarious reality faced by creative studios attempting to navigate the volatile world of game development and intellectual property.
The collapse also brings into focus the ambitious roadmap that had been planned. Updates, such as a major roadmap revision in April, were undertaken with the expectation of future growth. Now, it appears that the potential for the game itself, and the larger ‘user content platform’ the studio was developing, will never reach its full potential.
