Romero Games revives shooter project post Xbox cuts
In the often brutal landscape of game development, resilience is not just a virtue—it’s a survival mechanism. For Romero Games, the recent past proved to be an exercise in extreme endurance, marked by massive cuts, yet now, the studio is emerging from that challenge with a renewed sense of momentum.
More than a year after losing crucial funding for a major project, John Romero has announced that Romero Games has successfully secured a new publishing deal. This achievement marks a significant turnaround following the intense period of uncertainty that followed the cancellation of their ambitious first-person shooter, which had been backed by Xbox.
The journey to this point was anything but easy. When the project faced the axe in July 2025, the studio was forced into drastic measures. The team, which had been working on a large-scale vision, had to dramatically reduce its headcount, shrinking from approximately 110 employees down to just five people as they sought a viable path forward.
Instead of abandoning the original concept, the team executed a creative pivot. Rather than attempting to complete the sprawling original game, Romero Games opted to harness the assets, technology, and core ideas developed during the production of the cancelled shooter. This strategic shift allowed them to build an entirely new project, leveraging their existing knowledge to forge a fresh direction.
This bold approach paid off. By focusing on innovation rather than legacy, the studio attracted a new publisher, signaling that their creative vision remains potent and marketable. While Romero declined to disclose the identity of the new partner, the shift demonstrates a powerful belief in the potential of their evolving IP.
Today, the focus is firmly on execution. Romero Games has begun the rewarding process of rehiring around ten former employees, primarily bringing back key team leads from the previous project. The new endeavor is being built with a slightly leaner, but highly focused, crew of roughly fifteen people, and early signs suggest the new game is progressing exceptionally well.
The story of Romero Games is a compelling testament to the ability of creative teams to adapt, pivot, and bounce back. While the release date for the new title remains under wraps, the underlying message is clear: with ingenuity and determination, even the darkest cuts can lead to a vibrant new chapter in gaming history.
