Search controls your Windows 11 PC
Microsoft has just introduced a major evolution to the way we interact with Windows, moving the Search function far beyond a simple tool for finding files. At the recent Windows and Surface event, the company unveiled a new Search experience designed not just to deliver results, but to act as a true system composer—a command center that can control your PC.
This next generation of Windows Search promises to transform the Taskbar into a hub of immediate action. Starting this fall on Windows 11 PCs, users will be able to trigger thousands of quick actions directly from the Search bar, streamlining daily tasks significantly. Imagine needing to activate dark mode instantly or switch your device to Do Not Disturb with a simple voice command.
The possibilities extend into deeper system management. Users can fine-tune their environment on the fly, adjusting settings like the microphone slider or dimming their screen with quick phrases. For managing complex workspaces, new commands will allow users to instantly minimize all windows or rearrange them on the screen.
This integration makes tasks feel less like separate app interactions and more like direct commands. For instance, users can even initiate communications, such as sending a text message through Phone Link, all within the Search interface.
Beyond quick actions, the new Search experience is built on a foundation designed for superior performance. It is faster and more efficient because it is engineered using WinUI 3 technology, ensuring a more streamlined and responsive user experience.
Furthermore, the search engine is becoming smarter about intent. It is designed to better understand what you are looking for, meaning it can successfully locate items even when typos are involved.
Integrating artificial intelligence is another key focus. Copilot is now seamlessly summonable through the new Search, offering instant responses directly within the user interface. This allows users to interact with AI assistance without having to navigate away to a separate application, offering a truly unified workflow.
Microsoft is rolling out this innovative experience gradually. The new Search functionality will begin testing with Windows Insiders today, October 7, 2026, initially appearing through the Experimental channel. As the rollout continues, Microsoft is expected to share more details about this powerful new system composer.
