The Community Takes the Controls: How Quake Mappers Are Redefining the Shooter

The year 2026 proved to be a monumental milestone for the Quake community, delivering not just updates, but a flood of incredible content that celebrates three decades of id Software’s classic First-Person Shooter. From massive community projects to official campaign releases, the spirit of Quake mapping and creation has reached an astonishing new level.

The community’s creative energy was on full display with events like the Quake Brutalist Jam 3 and numerous map packs designed to commemorate the shooter’s 30th birthday. Alongside these jam initiatives, the studio itself continued to evolve the franchise with new official content, including the release of the compelling campaign, Dawn of the Machine.

But the creativity didn’t stop there. On Friday, the community unleashed one of their most ambitious map releases yet: the Quake Rooftops Jam. This pack throws the players into a fascinating design challenge, focusing entirely on the dynamic, precarious world of rooftops.

While a corridor shooter like Quake typically keeps players grounded, exploring the skyline offers a unique perspective. It taps into the atmospheric tension found in games like Thief: The Dark Project and Dishonored, positioning the maps as an exciting exploration of verticality and stealth.

The resulting maps showcase wildly imaginative design choices. Creators have taken the concept of a hidden, elevated space and transformed it into breathtaking environments. Some standout creations include Mermaids in the Basement, a sun-drenched, nonlinear map set in a Mediterranean coastal village partially submerged in water, and City of Traitors, a dizzying maze of gothic spires set against a misty purple void.

These creations demonstrate the community’s knack for blending complex gameplay with striking aesthetics. Another memorable example is Once, But No More, a sprawling cityscape that weaves together multiple architectural styles with engaging platforming sequences.

For those eager to dive into this new landscape, the Quake Rooftops Jam is accessible. It requires a Quake sourceport, such as Ironwail or vkQuake, and a few simple file extractions to bring the rooftop designs to life in your Quake environment.

Looking ahead, the future of the Quake series remains a fascinating topic. While there were whispers about Quake 6 development, the focus now appears to be on the studio’s next major title, with signs pointing toward Wolfenstein 3. Meanwhile, the multiplayer side saw a shift: the Quake Champions service has ended its live-service updates, though the game remains a solid, standalone experience.
