Sony quietly acquires Kena IP

The relationship between game development studios and major console makers is often a fascinating blend of creative partnership and corporate maneuvering. Ember Lab, for instance, established a strong bond with Sony, starting with their debut title, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which launched as a PlayStation exclusive before eventually finding a home on Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

This history set the stage for the follow-up title, Kena: Scars of Kosmora. While the sequel was initially slated for 2027, the landscape has shifted dramatically, suggesting that the next chapter in the Kena story is becoming inextricably linked to PlayStation.

The signals that Sony holds a vested interest in the success of the upcoming title are becoming clearer. During a recent collaboration with K-Pop star LISA, Sony showcased footage from its first-party titles, including Marvel Tokon, Wolverine, and God of War Laufey. Prominently featured among these was Ember Lab’s Kena: Scars of Kosmora.

However, the fine print surrounding the game’s announcement tells a different story about ownership. While the initial trailer stated that the game was “property of Ember Lab LLC,” the footage released alongside the promotional material now lists Scars of Kosmora as “a trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

This subtle legal shift suggests a strong corporate alignment. It implies that Sony and PlayStation are prioritizing the success of the Kena IP, demonstrating a clear desire to absorb the creative assets of Ember Lab. As anticipation builds for the release of Scars of Kosmora, it is highly probable that this relationship will evolve into a significant acquisition.
