Steam Frame in top 10 most popular VR headsets
The Steam Frame Surge: How Valve’s VR Headset is Changing the Gaming Landscape
Valve’s latest entry into the virtual reality arena, the Steam Frame>Steam Frame headset, is proving to be more than just an expensive piece of hardware—it’s a surprisingly popular player in the rapidly evolving world of VR. Launched in the latter half of September, the headset experienced a significant usage surge in October, signaling a shift in where gamers are spending their virtual time.
This momentum was clearly reflected in the latest Steam Frame accounted for a modest 0.41% of total VR headset usage. However, when the month shifted to October, that figure jumped to 4.13%. This remarkable increase means the Steam Frame successfully surpassed several established competitors, including the Oculus Rift S>, the Sony PS VR2>, the HTC Vive>, and even various Windows Mixed Reality setups and Bigscreen Beyond.
The headset is now firmly established as the sixth most popular VR device surveyed, sitting just .37% behind the Pico 4>Pico 4 and a substantial 24.14% behind the Meta Quest 3>. This rapid climb demonstrates a strong appetite for Steam-integrated VR experiences, positioning the Steam Frame as a compelling option for PC gamers looking to dive into virtual worlds.
The most notable shift occurred in October, where the Steam Frame saw an impressive 3.72% increase in usage. Conversely, other market leaders experienced dips; the Oculus Quest 2>Oculus Quest 2 saw a drop of 3.57% in usage during the same period. This fluctuation highlights the competitive yet dynamic nature of the VR market.
It is important to note that this usage bump is also contextualized by the rollout logistics. Although the headset officially released on September 18, the increased usage is partly attributed to shipping times and sustained sales over the month. Furthermore, Valve has acknowledged that the 256 GB and 1 TB models are currently backordered, meaning that while demand is high, new buyers will face a waiting list.
The results from the Hardware Survey, while valuable, offer a snapshot rather than a definitive measure. Since the survey is opt-in and conducted monthly, the statistics naturally fluctuate. This means the data provides a rough reading of current usage trends, but it still paints a very positive picture for Valve’s latest hardware innovation.
The competitive landscape remains fiercely contested, with devices like the Meta Quest 3S>Meta Quest 3S and the Valve Index HMD>Valve Index HMD also holding significant ground. Despite the fluctuations in the survey data, the overall trend strongly suggests that the Steam Frame is successfully capturing a vital segment of the VR community, setting a new benchmark for PC-centric virtual reality.
