Stellar Blade gets optional frame-gen on Switch 2

The highly anticipated action title Stellar Blade is making its way to the next generation of handheld gaming with the Nintendo Switch 2. But as developers navigated the complexities of porting the game, they also had to address a heated technical debate: should performance enhancements be mandatory?

When the project was first discussed, ShiftUp, the team behind the game, planned to utilize AMD’s frame-generation technology, specifically FSR 3.1, to boost the frame rate from 30 to 60fps across both handheld and docked modes. This approach aimed to deliver smoother gameplay, but frame generation is a polarizing technology, often drawing criticism for creating what some players call “fake frames.”

Recognizing the passionate feedback from the community, the developers listened. They decided that the experience of the player should ultimately dictate the settings. Consequently, ShiftUp has made a crucial adjustment, incorporating an option that allows users to toggle the frame generation feature on or off at will upon release.

This decision ensures that players have a genuine choice. While the performance gains are available, those who prefer the classic, native 30fps experience are welcome to opt out, ensuring that the game offers flexibility rather than forcing a single viewing experience.

This approach shifts the focus from maximizing raw frames to prioritizing player preference. For those who enjoy the visual fidelity boost, frame generation offers a smooth experience. For others, the option to maintain a native frame rate provides a welcome alternative, ensuring that everyone can enjoy Stellar Blade on the Switch 2 in the way that feels best to them.
