Studio layoffs: Damage turns into further cuts

The relentless churn in the gaming industry often feels less like a necessary business adjustment and more like a symptom of capital’s corrosive influence. When major studios announce layoffs, the conversation usually focuses on market conditions; yet, watching the ecosystem unfold, it often feels like a grim cycle playing out on a smaller, more personal scale.

This pattern is starkly illustrated by the recent news from Gamepires, the studio behind the popular open-world survival title Scum. Last week, the team announced that they had made the difficult decision to reduce the size of the Gamepires staff to ensure long-term sustainability and adaptation to challenging market conditions.

The statement, shared simply and without fanfare, mirrored the generic nature of many recent industry announcements. It was a necessary move for the studio, focusing attention on the ongoing development of Scum, but the context surrounding the decision introduced a layer of complex irony.

This particular situation gains an added dimension when you look at the history of the studio’s trajectory. Just eight months prior, Gamepires had been acquired by Splash Damage Group in a deal backed by Emona Capital. The cycle of economic pressure continued almost immediately, as Splash Damage itself was making significant reductions in staff just months later to remain agile.

The sequence of events tells a curious story about corporate strategy and survival in a tough market. Splash Damage, which had recently navigated its own acquisition by private equity, subsequently undertook major layoffs. This occurred just two months after Splash Damage itself had been acquired by private equity investors.

Despite these shifts, the core product remains. While the studio structure has evolved, the focus remains firmly on the game itself. Splash Damage has not released a new title since Transformers: Reactivate, which was cancelled in 2025, the ongoing work on Scum continues.

Splash Damage acknowledged the impact of these changes, emphasizing that the goal was stability. They stated that bringing the teams together around Scum provided immediate focus and a solid foundation for the future. They confirmed they would continue working closely with Gamepires to support updates and new content, ensuring the development of SCUM would proceed.

Ultimately, this story serves as a potent reminder that behind the headlines of corporate restructuring, the creative engine of the industry—the passion for building incredible games—must continue to find a way to sustain itself, even when the surrounding economic landscape is shifting dramatically.
