Subnautica 2 multiplayer mechanic finally here
Multiplayer gaming thrives on shared experiences, and sometimes, the most memorable moments happen when you need a voice—even if that voice is just a little bit of hilarious chaos. Take the world of Subnautica 2, where exploration into the deep ocean is already tense, and developers have introduced a revolutionary way for players to connect: proximity chat. This feature promises to turn deep-sea exploration into a communal adventure.
Creative director Anthony Gallegos revealed that this new in-game voice chat is designed to enhance the atmosphere. As players venture into the dark caves and formidable alien ocean, they can communicate with friends. The system cleverly simulates distance, allowing players to hear each other clearly up close, transitioning to a radio-like voice as they move further apart, eventually fading out completely. This setup is intended to amplify the tension of exploring the unknown, making the journey through the alien depths feel even more isolating and thrilling.
But the update goes beyond just communication. Patch 1.2 is a friend-focused overhaul that introduces new elements designed to inject humor and social interaction into the survival experience. Players can now utilize new emotes that allow them to express a wide range of emotions toward their companions—from cheering and clapping to showing annoyance or frustration. These emotes are poised to create those wonderfully wacky and memorable multiplayer moments that define group gaming.
For practical exploration, the update also streamlines interaction with inventory. Players can now access their friends’ stashes directly from their backpacks, eliminating the tedious need to search for scattered loot. To ensure security, a notification is triggered whenever an inventory is accessed, keeping the elements of friendly pickpocketing firmly out of the realm of possibility, unless you’re playing with a particularly forgetful friend.
Perhaps one of the most welcome additions is the introduction of player revives. If a group gets separated or one player succumbs to hunger and passes out, friends now have the ability to swim over and share vital oxygen to revive each other back to the world of the living. This feature is a genuinely helpful pitstop, adding a layer of collaborative support to the challenging underwater environment.
This update serves as a crucial stepping stone, providing essential quality-of-life improvements before the massive expansion of content is underway. While players look forward to the upcoming Early Access 2 update, which will introduce new regions, stories, vehicles, and progression, this patch ensures the foundation is solid. It’s a necessary pause that prepares the world for even greater adventures in the deep.
