The world of fantasy sports parodies is bracing for an exciting new chapter, as Slitherine has stepped in to take the reins for publishing the beloved Blood Bowl series.

This acquisition brings with it a wave of optimism for fans, signaling that a publisher known for quality strategy games is now poised to guide the future of this popular franchise. Slitherine, already a major force in gaming with titles like the Panzer Corps series and Warhammer 40,000 games such as Battlesector and Gladius, brings a powerful pedigree to the table.

The publishing rights were recently acquired from Nacon, which unfortunately filed for insolvency. This shift comes at an interesting time, particularly considering the recent development cycle of the Blood Bowl video games. The uncertainty surrounding the series’ future hung over projects like Blood Bowl 3 and potential updates.

Developers have long discussed how to evolve the franchise. One major plan involved updating the game to align with the latest tabletop rules refresh, which would involve a separate title, Warhammer Blood Bowl, for players who already owned the physical games. This ambitious plan faced delays but now seems set to move forward under the new publishing guidance.

“We have enormous respect for what Cyanide has built over the years,” said Marco Minoli, director of publishing at Slitherine. “We are excited to continue working closely with the team to support and grow the series together with its passionate community.”

Cyanide’s CEO, Patrick Pligersdorffer, expressed enthusiasm for the new arrangement. He stated that Slitherine’s proven expertise in publishing high-quality strategy games made them an ideal partner. “We are delighted to partner with Slitherine to ensure the future of the Blood Bowl videogames,” he commented.

The context for this new partnership is also illuminated by the series’ recent history. While promises existed for a smooth transition, the release of Blood Bowl 3 was met with some turbulence, featuring bugs, frustrating microtransactions, and a live-service approach that left many players nostalgic for the smoother experience of Blood Bowl 2.

With Slitherine now leading the charge, there is a palpable sense that the series can move forward with renewed focus and quality. The integration of new leadership promises not just to manage the publishing schedule but to nurture the community that fuels the passion behind this unique fantasy sports experience, ensuring the Blood Bowl legacy continues for years to come.
