  • Open-source ZLUDA v6 brings PhysX performance boost to AMD Radeon GPUs

In the world of PC gaming, legacy technology often holds a powerful, if forgotten, magic. Recently, an open-source effort has managed to breathe new life into this forgotten physics engine by bridging a significant technological gap: allowing AMD Radeon GPUs to natively handle Nvidia’s specialized PhysX ecosystem.

The breakthrough comes from the ZLUDA v6 library, an open-source project that fundamentally changes how graphics cards run complex physics simulations. By introducing support for Nvidia‘s 32-bit PhysX CUDA system on non-Nvidia hardware, ZLUDA allows systems without native PhysX functionality to process these effects natively.

The impact of this integration is immediate and dramatic. Testing the library in demanding titles like Mafia II running on an AMD Radeon platform demonstrated a staggering performance leap. Users saw frame rates jump from 26.2FPS to an impressive 80.2FPS, transforming gameplay experience on otherwise unsupported hardware.

Beyond raw speed, this integration delivers visual fidelity. ZLUDA successfully restores complex visual effects—such as realistic debris and intense flames—to systems that previously lacked the necessary processing power. It’s a testament to the power of community-driven innovation in reviving proprietary features for competing hardware.

For context, PhysX was once Nvidia’s go-to solution for bringing detailed physics to games, handling complex simulations of cloth, particles, and debris. Today, that role has largely been taken over by modern engine tools like Chaos in Unreal Engine or the highly popular Havok physics engine.

While the achievement is undeniably impressive, the development behind ZLUDA is currently operating on a more relaxed schedule. The developers acknowledge a temporary halt in commercial support, meaning future progress proceeds at a slower, weekend-project pace. Optimisation limits currently mean that some users might still encounter glitches in fluid simulations or difficulty loading the software into Steam games.

Despite these current hurdles, the roadmap for ZLUDA is ambitious. Developers are actively working to refine Windows support, improve error reporting within the ROCm library, and expand capabilities by incorporating new machine learning features and enhanced texture support.

Ultimately, this open-source initiative showcases how community collaboration can challenge established proprietary barriers, offering incredible potential for extending the lifespan and capability of legacy technologies across the entire hardware landscape.

  • Total War: Warhammer 3 is getting new endgames, individual victory conditions, a Vampire Counts rework, and Nurgle’s three grossest champions

Creative Assembly has dropped some fascinating developments regarding the future of their Total War universe during a recent livestream, revealing intriguing details about upcoming updates and the highly anticipated Lords of the End Times DLC. For anyone who loves the gothic horror of vampires and the chaos of war, these announcements promise an exciting shift in campaign design.

The conversation touched upon several major changes planned for the next evolution of the game. While some anticipation focused on the long-awaited siege rework, it was confirmed that this crucial feature will be integrated into the 9.1 patch, meaning players can expect tactical improvements soon. Development is also underway on other key elements, including Neferata, adding more depth to the world.

The biggest reveal, however, centered around new endgames themed around the End Times. Previously, campaigns could conclude with an arbitrary crisis; now, these End Times events are being integrated into the midgame, serving as powerful catalysts that dramatically power up factions before culminating in a truly epic conclusion to any campaign.

Three distinct endgames are currently in development: one based on an altered version of the existing Vermintide crisis, another centered on Nagash, a legendary lord slated for the DLC; and a third focusing on Archaon, the ultimate agent of Chaos. These events will be introduced with cinematic reveals and clear explanations of their unique mechanics.

Take Archaon, for example. He is designed as a force of terrifying power, boasting a ward save that makes him virtually undefeatable until his lieutenants are crippled. As players weaken him, he can devastate provinces after razing them, meaning even if the land is reclaimed, it remains locked until his defeat. Furthermore, Archaon gains the ability to confederate with any Chaos faction, leading to spectacular climactic conflicts and alliances.

Campaign victories will also undergo a significant overhaul in update 9.0. Every legendary lord will receive unique victory conditions, offering players diverse ways to achieve triumph. These objectives will range from ranking up thematically appropriate units and constructing famous landmarks to strategically confederating with allies.

The Vampire Counts faction is also seeing a major injection of new content. The rework introduces an updated recruitment system where Raise Dead can now replace lost troops based on battlefield casualties, turning every corpse in a province into a potential unit. Vampires themselves will become significantly more powerful but harder to locate, requiring players to discover and secure hidden lairs to customize their bloodlines.

Furthermore, the lore is getting richer, as Vlad and Isabella von Carstein are now eligible to become legendary lords in campaigns starting from a heroic perspective. This promises fresh narrative paths for undead players who have been waiting for some meaningful development in this iconic faction.

The Lords of the End Times DLC lineup is also shaping up with new additions. Besides Nagash and Boris Todbringer, the Glottkin are joining the Warriors of Chaos, bringing powerful new units like the Putrid Blightkings and Chaos Siege Giants, alongside access to Nurgle’s daemons.

While one final legendary lord remains to be announced for the DLC, speculation points toward Thanquol, the Skaven Grey Seer—infamous for his ability to repeatedly fail upwards in history. Whatever the identity of this final Lord will be, the anticipation for the entire expansion is already reaching fever pitch.
