The Wild Side of AI Fiction: What Half a Million Users Are Asking ChatGPT to Write
When we think of artificial intelligence, we often picture complex code or hyper-realistic images. But recently, researchers have dug into the more whimsical side of large language models, exploring what happens when users ask AI to unleash their inner storyteller. The findings reveal that the digital playground for AI-generated fiction is far stranger and more specific than anyone might expect.
A fascinating study analyzed half a million anonymous English-language conversations from ChatGPT users who requested fictional content using WildChat. The goal? To understand the landscape of “AI fanfic” and the types of prompts that dominate this digital creation space. The results painted a vivid picture of how people engage with AI when they want to conjure up worlds, characters, and narratives.
The data showed that fiction generation is a massive trend. More than a third of these conversations were dedicated to creating stories—ranging from original tales and scripts to roleplaying scenarios and worldbuilding. This demonstrates a clear appetite among users for AI to act as co-creators in the literary sense.
Researchers categorized user behavior into two distinct groups: story cyclers and infinite story demanders. Story cyclers are those who ask for repeated iterations of a story before moving on to a new topic. In contrast, infinite story demanders are users who crave endless repetitions of the same narrative or very similar concepts over extended periods.
The most intriguing finding came from observing the infinite story demanders. One user in this group demonstrated an extremely specific fixation. Over several months, this individual prompted the AI to generate thousands of variations centered around a highly unusual scenario: a character from the visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club, Natsuki, giving birth to a daughter named Sakura.
Adding another layer of delightful irony, researchers noted that this specific character reference seemed to echo popular media, potentially drawing inspiration from characters in the Naruto manga and anime series. It turns a general request for fanfiction into a deeply personal, niche obsession just by feeding the AI the right prompts.
The popularity of these fictional universes was clear: Doki Doki Literature Club, League of Legends, Freedom Planet, and Naruto topped the list of fandoms most frequently requested for fanfiction. Furthermore, within the fiction subset of users, just two percent were responsible for generating more than eighty percent of all conversations—a testament to how intensely focused AI storytelling can be.
While the creativity unleashed by AI is undeniable, the nature of this content presents a fascinating contrast to human-led fan communities. Stories shared on platforms like A03 thrive on communal encouragement; writers celebrate each other and readers discover new interests together in a vibrant social space. Conversely, AI-generated fiction tends to be inherently isolated and more solipsistic, offering a unique, solitary experience that stands apart from the shared joy of human storytelling.
