    The quest for cutting-edge artificial intelligence has brought unprecedented demands on water resources, pushing massive data centers into new frontiers of efficiency. But as these facilities seek near-zero consumption through sophisticated closed-loop cooling systems, they have inadvertently stumbled upon a surprising environmental challenge when their industrial discharge met municipal infrastructure.

    In Cheyenne, Wyoming, the intersection of high-tech innovation and public water management led to an unexpected investigation. The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities stopped accepting industrial wastewater from data center cooling operations after tracking a rare bacterium in the city’s reclaimed water system back to Goat Systems LLC, the entity contracted by Meta to build its local campus.

    The issue centered on the “fill-and-flush” process—a necessary step in commissioning some of these highly efficient cooling loops. This procedure involves filling piping with water, flushing it to clear debris before operation, and then sending that used water to drain. Goat Systems reportedly routed this flush water, which contained the contaminant, into Cheyenne’s sanitary sewer.

    Lab staff caught a specific bacterium, Cupriavidus gilardii, during routine sampling. While the origin of the bacterium remains unknown, the presence of this metal-resistant microbe interfered with two water reclamation plants and forced the entire reuse system offline for months of necessary cleanup.

    This discovery raised more than just biological concerns. The Board worried that closed-loop systems, which often carry chemicals like glycol, introduce substances that municipal treatment plants are not designed to process. Furthermore, the concern extended beyond contamination; the possibility existed that this bacterium could become an aerosol hazard if it were introduced into Cheyenne’s reclaimed water used for park and golf course irrigation.

    The environmental disruption required a swift resolution. Meta stepped up, supporting its general contractor Fortis, which arranged for the wastewater to be hauled offsite. Independent testing conducted at local facilities in late June cleared the systems, allowing the reuse system to come back online.

    While the immediate crisis was resolved and the water systems were restored, the incident served as a stark reminder of the complex environmental footprint of the digital age. City Councilman Pete Laybourn described the full disclosure as a very, very unpleasant surprise, highlighting the often-hidden dependencies between massive industrial operations and community resources.
