  • Star Wars: Galactic Racer has a lot more Slay the Spire DNA than I expected, because its ex-Burnout devs wanted to add ‘real consequence’ to each race

Forget what you think you know about racing games. Galactic Racer doesn’t just ask you to drive fast; it throws you into an unpredictable, consequence-driven universe where every decision matters, turning high-speed mayhem into a true test of skill and strategy.

While some might initially balk at the title, many developers are happy to point out that this isn’t just another sequel to 1999’s Episode 1 Racer. Galactic Racer brings podracing’s most iconic characters and legendary courses into a brand-new, expansive setting within the Star Wars universe. But beneath the surface of the flashy visuals lies a deep, engaging gameplay structure.

The core campaign mode is where the true innovation shines. Instead of simple circuit racing, players navigate an underground league, piloting diverse vehicles like speeder bikes and landspeeders. The experience mimics the addictive loop of roguelikes like Slay the Spire, but instead of managing cards, you are strapped into a rocket, demanding quick thinking and tactical adjustments.

“We wanted to bring more consequence to racing games in general,” explained Kieran Crimmins, creative director at Fuse Games. “Your decisions matter, your build matters, the way you play matters. We wanted something that had real consequences.”

The game establishes a clear hierarchy: players start at the bottom of an underground league, working their way up to major tournaments and finally getting to command a podracer. As players race through various courses—some day, some night, forward, some backward—they must wipe out before finishing each league to earn progress. This structure ensures that every choice has weight.

This dynamic system means navigating the world isn’t just about raw speed; it’s about strategic planning. Players must master not only track knowledge but also vehicle customization. By equipping their vehicles with abilities, they can mitigate risks, deploy turbo boosts, and unlock entirely new racing styles, making each run a unique tactical puzzle.

This depth in customization allows for truly unique builds. Swapping out defensive shields for powerful turbo boosts fundamentally alters the risk profile of a race, rewarding players who master the synergies between their vehicle choices rather than simply focusing on linear upgrades.

The progression focuses more on understanding the track layout and environmental factors than just accumulating upgrades. The motivation is clear: to reach the next planet, explore new environments, and further the unfolding Star Wars narrative. This blend grounds the action in exploration while keeping the racing adrenaline high.

In a landscape filled with varied racing titles—from Forza Horizon 6 to ClutchGalactic Racer stands out for its ambition. It packs an unbelievable amount of mechanical variety and vehicle depth into a single experience, setting a new benchmark for what fast-paced gameplay can achieve.
