  • My favourite new roguelike is all about evolution and crabs, and it’s celebrating 500k sales with a big update

Sometimes, when the roguelike exhaustion sets in, the only solution is to dive back into the endless grind. This time, that antidote arrived in the form of Everything is Crab, an action experience that throws the theory of evolution right into your hands. Forget waiting millions of years for change; here, you simply enjoy a big meal and watch yourself sprout antlers, tentacles, or wings.

Since launching last month, this crabby adventure has quickly cemented its place in my nightly ritual. After a walk and a brush of teeth, the only thing that matters is spending two hours on my Steam Deck making delightful new freaks. And with recent developments, escaping the clutches of this evolving chaos seems increasingly impossible.

The latest evolution, Evolution 1.1, just dropped, packed with changes that promise to turn the hunt into a true evolutionary spectacle. The update coincides with the game hitting the 500,000 sales milestone—a respectable number for a game so delightfully crafted.

The core of the new content revolves around the new evolution known as Tracker. This Level 3 specialization grants you the ability to “track specific targets and get varied bonuses against them,” turning you into a true predator. This new affinity works alongside other specializations, allowing players to become the ultimate hunters who know exactly what they want.

For those who were tired of the constant frantic search for sustenance, a brand-new ultimate ability called Lick Wounds has arrived. This mechanic lets you self-heal, mercifully eliminating the need to sprint around frantically searching for sparkly morsels. It’s a welcome change that streamlines the survival loop.

Further customization options have been added, with new specializations introduced for Stoner, Leech, and Spur. Players also have the option to skip specialization entirely, earning 10 mutagen points instead, offering a different path for chaotic evolution.

The progression system is now more engaging, making it easier to unlock powerful evolutions. For instance, new objectives allow players to earn locked content; you can obtain the powerful Lick Wounds ultimate by beating Pressure level 3, and unlock the Tracker evolution after conquering pressure level 7.

Beyond character progression, the world itself has received a noticeable makeover. New foliage, trees, obstacles, and other map elements have sprouted up, making the environment feel more alive and expansive. Plus, there are new cosmetics unlocked by completing challenges, giving players plenty of reasons to celebrate their evolutionary achievements.

The update also delivered several quality-of-life tweaks, balance adjustments, and integration with Twitch, ensuring a smoother, more engaging experience for everyone. Keep an eye out, as even bigger updates are planned for late summer, featuring community-designed additions and more free cosmetics. And prepare yourselves for autumn, which will bring premium DLC alongside new freebies.
