The digital landscape is often a breeding ground for absurdity, but when government entities decide to enter the arena, they tend to find their mischief amplified by pop culture. In a recent move that perfectly blends state-sponsored messaging with gaming lore, the official White House X account unveiled an AI-generated meme: a Destiny 2 character sheet featuring a strikingly muscular Donald Trump wielding Gjallarhorn.
The accompanying tweet, captioned “Eyes up, Guardians,” immediately set a tone of bluster. The image itself depicts a figure resembling Duke Nukem-esque Donald Trump, complete with the US flag backdrop and fighter jets, juxtaposed against a Rolls Royce. This piece of blunt-edged state propaganda featured an absurd power level for the character—4700, vastly exceeding the maximum in the actual Destiny 2 game—and outfitted him with a B2 Bomber companion, an aircraft reportedly costing over $2 billion per unit and recently deployed in America’s attack on Iran.
This latest offering is not an isolated incident. The White House and its departments have cultivated a long-running tradition of using videogame themes and artificial intelligence to generate propaganda. Just days prior, Homeland Security riffed on the cover art for The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker to celebrate the US Coast Guard. Secretary Brooke Rollins riffed on GTA 6 in a recent video, while the Department of Labor and Customs and Border Protection also took swings at the GTA franchise. These examples show a pattern of using popular media to communicate official narratives.
Even earlier, as noted by Andy Chalk, the White House had already issued a spate of videogame-themed AI propaganda to promote its actions in Iran, including using iconic lines from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
The timing of the latest meme, however, adds a layer of irony. Just as this highly stylized visual was released, Washington-based Bungie, the developers behind Destiny 2, announced sweeping layoffs. Sony executive Hermen Hulst confirmed that these reductions would affect “a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members.” When placed alongside the meme, the image took on a new, darkly comedic context: the President appeared to be mocking hundreds of developers who were suddenly rendered out of work.
Whether this chaotic blend is meant as high-level statesmanship or a low-brow joke remains debatable. It exists in the realm of a malevolent parody, reflecting a deeper tension between official messaging and the realities faced by the creative industries. The gaming community has responded to the disposal of “generational talent” with far more tact than the government’s latest digital antics.
