The Steam Machine has finally landed, kicking off a pre-order frenzy—provided you manage to win the highly coveted reservation system lottery. While the device itself is a beautiful little companion cube, we have to admit that for entry-level PC gamers, it feels a bit underwhelming right out of the gate.
Part of this feeling stems from the heavy hand of the AI apocalypse, which seems to be aggressively hoarding memory and driving up prices, making the original goal of an affordable entry point feel increasingly distant. However, Valve remains committed to pushing the system forward, tackling some of the most pressing graphical challenges head-on.
The real excitement lies in the technical partnership underway between Valve and AMD. Ahead of launch, they have confirmed that they are working directly with AMD to bring FSR 4 support to the Steam Machine and its RDNA 3-powered GPU.
But wait—where is the release date? Unfortunately, timing remains elusive. While AMD had initially suggested bringing their machine learning-based upscaling technology to the RX 7000-series cards in July, they were notably cagey about extending this support to the RDNA 3 architecture found in the Steam Machine‘s custom GPU components.
This ambiguity suggests that the July timeline might be strictly limited to certain high-end hardware. Valve needs AMD’s full cooperation to ensure that their semi-custom 28 CU RDNA 3 GPU receives this crucial FSR 4 upgrade, setting the stage for a smoother experience.
Of course, improving graphical quality is a double-edged sword. The Steam Machine’s hardware components are relatively modest, meaning that upscaling and frame generation are essential to cope with modern games at pleasing resolutions. This means virtually every game will likely rely on FSR 4 to deliver an acceptable visual experience.
While this gives users access to the best possible image quality AMD can muster via upscaling, it also introduces a new balancing act. The machine learning model used in FSR 4 is performance-intensive, and running this extra overhead on hardware not originally designed for it could create additional friction for some users.
Furthermore, while the potential visual boost is clear, support isn’t automatic. Many games do not natively enable FSR 4, requiring users to activate it through the Adrenalin Driver software. The real test will be seeing how this integration works within SteamOS and across the various titles.
