  • China’s Loongson launches homegrown 16-core server CPU built on LoongArch architecture — 40W chip with DDR4 ECC and 32 PCIe lanes targets cheap SMB file, database, and web servers

    The race for cost-effective, high-performance computing is heating up, and Loongson Technology has thrown down a serious challenge with the unveiling of its new server processor, the 3C3000. This 16-core chip is squarely aimed at making powerful general-purpose systems accessible to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), setting a new benchmark for value in the server market.

    Unveiled publicly on June 26, 2026, the 3C3000 is built on Loongson’s proprietary architecture, designed specifically for demanding yet flexible workloads such as file serving, database management, web operations, and core business process handling. Crucially, the company asserts that the general-purpose computing performance of this new processor matches that of their earlier 3C5000 server processor, demonstrating a significant leap in efficiency without compromising capability.

    Under the hood, the 3C3000 operates on a robust 64-bit architecture and utilizes the LoongArch instruction set. It leverages the LA364E core design, packaged in an FCBGA1371 format. This design choice not only optimizes manufacturing but also ensures compatibility with existing platform designs, making it easier for system builders to integrate this powerful component into their infrastructure.

    With 16 physical cores and 16 threads capable of operating between 1.5 GHz and 1.8 GHz, the chip is packed with sophisticated features. Each core is equipped with 128-bit vector instructions and advanced three-issue out-of-order execution capabilities. To manage data flow efficiently, each core integrates fixed-point units, a dedicated vector unit, and dual memory access units.

    While optimizing for cost, the processor still provides solid support for crucial server demands. It features modest but functional cache architecture: each of the 16 cores includes 64KB of private L1 instruction and data caches, supplemented by a shared 16MB L2 cache across all cores. Memory handling is equally strong, with an integrated memory controller supporting two 72-bit DDR4-2400 channels, complete with essential ECC support for server-class error correction.

    The design also prioritizes flexibility and connectivity. The 3C3000 offers substantial expansion capabilities through two PCIe x16 interfaces, totaling 32 lanes that can be configured flexibly into four x4 or x8 links. Furthermore, the chip includes specialized interfaces like LCL for dual-processor interconnection, alongside SPI, UART, I2C, and numerous GPIOs, ensuring wide compatibility with various peripheral systems.

    Efficiency is baked into the architecture. Loongson manages power consumption effectively, achieving a typical consumption of just 40W when running at a 1.5 GHz clock speed. Dynamic frequency adjustment and main module clock shutdown features allow the processor to intelligently reduce power consumption during lighter workloads, maximizing energy savings.

    Finally, security is addressed directly on the chip. The processor includes an integrated security and trust module that supports Chinese national cryptographic algorithms for secure encryption and decryption, adding a layer of essential protection for enterprise users. By focusing on high-performance general computing rather than intensive AI acceleration, the 3C3000 positions itself perfectly in the market: delivering high performance at a highly competitive price point.
