  • Steam Client update introduces new ‘PyroWave’ video codec for low-latency game streaming

    The quest for seamless, real-time game streaming has been an ongoing technological arms race for video game companies. Services like xCloud, Nvidia’s Geforce Now, and Valve’s Steam Link have provided players with ways to access games remotely. Yet, despite these advancements, streaming remains a compromise compared to playing natively on the hardware.

    The core challenge lies in achieving true fidelity. Current streaming setups often grapple with frustrating issues such as macro-blocking, visual smearing, and, most critically for gamers, input latency. These imperfections detract from the immersive experience that native gameplay offers.

    However, innovation is constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. With Steam poised for a significant leap forward, new breakthroughs are emerging to address these long-standing hurdles.

    Valve has recently introduced PyroWave, a pioneering video codec designed specifically to revolutionize game streaming. This new technology was discovered during internal development by EOZ VR’s Brad Lynch and has now been integrated into the Steam Client beta.

    PyroWave is engineered as a fast/low-latency GPU encoder based on Vulkan, making it uniquely tailored for gaming environments. Its primary focus is to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency streaming—the two most sought-after improvements in the industry.

    While currently being utilized for local game streaming over ethernet with bitrates around 200 megabits per second, the potential implications are massive. By focusing on efficient encoding and minimal delay, PyroWave aims to significantly enhance the quality of remote gameplay.

    This development signals that even if streaming never entirely replaces direct hardware play, the pursuit of technical excellence in this space continues unabated. New innovations like PyroWave demonstrate that breakthroughs are still being made in refining the digital experience for gamers.
