When asked for a small update on the game’s progress, Barone offered a candid perspective that highlights the unique challenges of crafting a larger, more complex experience. He admitted that the development timeline is stretching out because the ambition of this new title exceeds that of previous projects, compounded by his innate desire to be a perfectionist.
“I don’t like to share too many screenshots, or even talk about the systems in too much detail while the game is in development,” Barone explained in his latest blog post. He felt that revealing too much information prematurely risked setting an unrealistic bar for the final product.
For a player craving cozy, atmospheric gaming experiences, this cautious approach makes sense. Barone suggested that sharing systems and visuals too early risks creating excitement about features that may ultimately change or fall short of expectations. As he put it, inaccurate screenshots are truly the goopy bread of indie game development.
This strategy stands in contrast to the current industry trend of “drip-feeding” content—releasing demos and constant blog posts to build hype before a release. While methods like those used for titles such as Cult of the Lamb or YapYap have proven successful in community engagement, Barone is opting for a different path.
“I’m in a position where I don’t need to market the game,” he humbly stated. Before the release, Barone noted that he doesn’t feel pressured to generate massive hype. Instead of marketing, his focus remains squarely on slowly but surely bringing Haunted Chocolatier up to its true potential.
By prioritizing quality and a deliberate pace over immediate exposure, Barone is trusting the process. This measured approach underscores a core truth about independent development: sometimes, the most engaging experience is the one patiently crafted, rather than rushed to market.
